Immigration Enforcement Bill Co-Sponsored By Rep. Garrett Passes House

On Thursday afternoon the U.S. House of Representatives approved two separate legislative initiatives, each working to curb illegal immigration in the United States.

H.R. 3003 - the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act - seeks to restrict eligibility of grants from the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security to states and localities who do not comply with Federal law. Further, it allows for a more vigorous detention process for criminal aliens.

H.R. 3004 - Kate's Law - commemorates Kate Steinle, a 32-year old medical device saleswoman, who was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant who had been deported five times. At the time of her murder, she was strolling a San Francisco pier with her father. This legislation aims to increase the penalties imposed on criminal aliens who repeatedly cross American borders illegally and prevent them from doing so any further. Congressman Garrett of Virginia is a cosponsor of this legislation.

Upon passage of each of these bills, Rep. Tom Garrett (VA-05) issued the following statement:

"I applaud Chairman Goodlatte and my colleagues in the House for the bipartisan efforts to strengthen the enforcement of our immigration laws. Justice that isn't blind, simply isn't justice and we can no longer allow states to exercise their own discretion with regard to Federal immigration law. Today's passage of these bills takes a leap in the right direction to restore sovereignty to our nation by enforcing border security and prosecuting criminal offenders."

The White House has expressed support for each of these bills.
