DeLauro Rallies with Workers on International Women's Day

Statement

Date: March 8, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today spoke at the Women Workers Rising rally outside of the U.S. Department of Labor to celebrate International Women's Day. DeLauro has long fought for policies that include equal pay for equal work, paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, affordable childcare, access to safe and affordable women's healthcare, and protections from violence and harassment against women in the workplace.

Here are the remarks, as delivered:

"Hello, I'm Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut. I'm proud to stand with all of you today--women workers rising! I stand here today because my mother, who today is 103, started to work when she was 14 years old. I stand here for her and what she did and what she sacrificed all of her life so that I could be a Member of the United States House of Representatives.

"I stand here today for those millions of women workers across this country, who couldn't take a day off, who can't take time to be with their families because they might lose their jobs, or they wouldn't get their pay for the day. And that's why what you fight for, what I fight for, is equal pay for equal work, paid sick days, paid family leave, affordable child care. And if we stand together, brothers and sisters, we will turn it around and we'll make it happen. God bless you for being here today."
