Feinstein Opposes Justice Department Decision to Change Position on Texas Voter Law

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement opposing the Justice Department's decision to reverse its position that Texas's voter ID law was adopted with discriminatory intent:

"The Justice Department's decision to reverse its position that Texas's voter ID law was adopted with discriminatory intent does not bode well for this administration's approach to voting rights.

"During Attorney General Sessions's confirmation process, I repeatedly expressed my concern about his hostility toward federal efforts to protect voting rights and approval of the Supreme Court's ruling that overturned a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. Now we're seeing those concerns manifest themselves.

"The Texas law, which had previously been blocked by the Voting Rights Act, has barred 600,000 Americans legally eligible to vote from exercising their rights. Making it easier for states to disenfranchise citizens is exactly the type of policy I feared Attorney General Sessions would push for. If the Justice Department will not protect voting rights, the courts and Congress must act, and I will do all I can to ensure Americans can exercise this fundamental right."
