Rep. Mark Takano Statement on House Passage of H.J. Res. 38

Statement

Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement after the House passed H.J. Res. 38, which employs the rarely used Congressional Review Act to eliminate the Stream Protection Rule. The rule updates existing mining regulations to prevent the pollution of streams resulting from mining activity.

"If you own a coal mining company, own stock in coal mining companies, or receive donations from coal mining companies, you are rightfully celebrating the House vote today. For the rest of us who simply want every American to have access to clean and safe water, House Republicans' success in rolling back the Stream Protection Rule is a significant setback.

"Despite conservative rhetoric, regulations are often critical tools to protect Americans from corporations that would otherwise do them harm to turn a profit. The Stream Protection Rule is an example of such a regulation, and mining communities will be forced to deal with the health and environmental consequences if it's repealed.
