The Obama Administration's Last Minute Regs Undermine the Will of the People

Statement

Date: Nov. 17, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 5982, the Midnight Rules Relief Act:

"This week, every Chairman in the House and I sent a letter calling on the Administration to stop issuing more rules or regulations in its final days. Enacting major rules at such a time circumvents Congress, undermines the Constitution's separation of powers, and contradicts the will of the people who so resoundingly rejected President Obama's policies this election.

"Yet after eight years of experience, we know the Obama Administration regularly engages in overzealous rulemaking, whether those rules are justified or not. That is why the House passed the Midnight Rules Relief Act today allowing Congress to group together every regulation the Obama Administration attempts to finalize in its last days and strike all of them down with a single piece of legislation. The American people have spoken, and Congress cannot spend all of its time once President-elect Trump takes office individually striking down the worst regulations from the current Administration."

Note: Majority Leader McCarthy and House Chairmen sent a letter to all secretaries, administrators, directors, and commissioners in the Obama Administration on November 15, 2016, calling for a stop to all new regulations and rules.
