Issue Position: Women and Families

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

As the mother of three daughters, it's personal for Gail when Congressman Tipton votes against equal pay for women. That's wrong, and we all know it. In today's Congress, bills to ensure equal pay for equal work are regularly defeated, including the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would have protected workers and allowed them to learn more about wage discrepancies. Gail will provide a strong new voice and a vote in Congress on this issue, and will always fight for the rights of women to earn fair wages and support their families.

Today's Congress also poses dire threats to women's reproductive rights. Congressman Tipton and others have voted in favor of defunding Planned Parenthood -- in Tipton's case at least five times. This is incredibly shortsighted, since the lion's share of its services are devoted to reducing unwanted pregnancies, and it offers screenings to catch treatable conditions such as cancer or STDs before they reach the life-threatening stage. Members of Congress have introduced many other pieces of dangerous legislation in recent years, including "personhood" bills, requirements for women to undergo ultrasounds, bills to allow health care providers to deny reproductive services, and outright bans on certain classifications of abortion. Gail will fight and vote against these bills that undermine women's reproductive rights, and will always support commonsense strategies to reduce unintended pregnancies in the first place.

In Congress, Gail will strengthen our families by fighting to make the Child Tax Credit permanent -- a credit that truly helps working families struggling to make ends meet. She will stand up to protect access to vital women's health services throughout the 3rd CD, and to ensure women are paid the same amount for the same work as their counterparts.
