Cramer: Supreme Court Immigration Ruling Upholds Authority Of Congress To Make Laws

Congressman Kevin Cramer released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal today to reconsider a lower court ruling on the immigration system overhaul proposed by President Obama. The court ruling in U.S. v. Texas in June stopped the Obama Administration's executive order on illegal immigration in a lawsuit filed by 26 states, including North Dakota. The Administration's recent request for a rehearing was based on the fact that a vacancy on the Supreme Court at the time of the June ruling made it a tie with four justices each voting for and against the case. In the event of a tie vote, the ruling by the lower court stands.

"Today's decision prevents the President's unconstitutional executive order on illegal immigration from being revived. It is another federal court ruling on an Obama Administration effort that is a blatant overreach of executive branch power. I joined 112 Members of Congress in May 2015 supporting an amicus brief in U.S. v. Texas urging a federal court to declare as unlawful President Obama's executive action in illegal immigration. Today's decision affirms the rule of law and upholds the authority of Congress to make laws, not the President and Federal agencies."
