Minter Calls For Day Of Service And Giving To Protest Trump

Location: Waterbury, VT
Issues: Elections

Democratic candidate for governor Sue Minter called on all Vermonters to spend Thursday, January 7th giving back to the community as a constructive protest of Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump's visit to Burlington.

"It has been encouraging that all my fellow candidates for Governor have denounced Trump," said Minter. "But simply denouncing his hateful rhetoric isn't enough. I'm calling on all of us to give back to the community on Thursday to show Trump that the hatred and intolerance he is spewing has no place in our state or our country."

In an email to supporters and on social media, Minter encouraged Vermonters to devote either their time, money or both next Thursday to a cause that helps bring us together, not tear us apart. A cause that represents compassion, kindness and love, not disrespect, bigotry and hate. Minter highlighted Vermonters who exemplify such values with their leadership helping the Syrian refugees, such as the Frenzen's of Burlington who are providing medical care and supplies to refugees in Greece and the trio of South Burlington students who have devoted the past month to collecting warm clothes and blankets to send to the refugees.

"Every minute volunteered and donation gives serves to directly counter the hate-filled rhetoric of the Republican frontrunner," said Minter. "It's my sincere hope that when Trump gets back on his custom-outfitted, $100 million jet and taxis down our airport runway, he will know that he has been in Vermont, he will have a better understanding of how we lead our lives, and that Vermonters understand the real reasons why we live in our great state and nation."
