Ron has led efforts to keep the internet tax-free by opposing both internet access taxes as well as internet sales taxes.
The U.S. tax code is more than 70,000 pages. It is complex, burdensome and anti-growth. If we were designing a tax system from scratch, would anyone seriously suggest that we create a tax code that looks like our current monstrosity? Of course not.
The tax code should not be used to reward politically-connected entities or to punish politically-unpopular constituencies. The ideal tax system will raise an adequate amount of revenue to finance the legitimate operations of government while doing the least possible damage to the economy. To this end, a pro-growth tax system -- be it a flat tax, a fair tax or another pro-taxpayer mechanism -- should replace our current tax code.
It is important to create a simple and fair tax system because every page that is added to the tax code represents additional power conferred upon the IRS, an agency which has abused its authority. The targeting of conservative Americans and groups by the Internal Revenue Service represents a serious abuse of power that demands accountability and should prompt a major overhaul of the tax code. The IRS is one of the most powerful agencies in the federal government; the reality that it was used as a political weapon should be frightening to Americans of all political bents.
Bureaucrats such as Lois Lerner who pursue a political agenda while serving in a non-political "career" position should be terminated from the civil service. Moreover, IRS officials who abuse their authority and infringe on the freedom of Americans citizens should be prosecuted under applicable statutes.
