Langevin Statement on London Bombings

LANGEVIN STATEMENT ON LONDON BOMBINGS
July 7, 2005

(Warwick, R.I.)-Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today offered his thoughts and prayers to the people of London as well as his condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

"We will stand ready to offer any assistance necessary to our British friends. This morning's events serve as a reminder of the continuing threat of terrorism faced not only in this country, but around the world. However, we will not let these cowardly acts deter our efforts to make the world a safer place - a place where people should not fear their morning commute to work or school.

"While I am not aware of any intelligence indicating an immediate threat to the US, we should remain ever vigilant. The public transit sector has been upgraded to an Orange alert status, and I am confident that Homeland Security officials will continue to evaluate the situation and take any necessary and appropriate action.

"Going forward, we must make sure we are paying appropriate attention to our mass transit systems in an effort to make them as safe as possible. I will continue to push the President to follow through on his promise to create a national transportation security plan, which is three months overdue. I will also continue to advocate for dedicated funding for transit and rail security as well as money to ensure that our citizens are better prepared."
