Marvin Nelson of Rolla, the Democratic candidate for North Dakota Governor stopped by our news radio studios to talk about his platform, issues he believes need to be confronted and to challenge he says his opponent, GOP standout candidate Doug Burgum to step out of the shadows and debate him.
"We have major differences." began the mild mannered Nelson, appearing energized, not drained by his sojourn through western North Dakota. He (Burgum) wants to take the money we are spending for public schools today and he wants to build charter schools and private schools with that, (money). I think that that is a mistake. I think that is a big difference between the two of us," says Nelson. When it comes to education, Nelson has made it clear he would rather delegate then have too much of a 'hands on' approach.
"As Governor in many ways with education I think that my job is to keep my fingers off a little bit and let the professionals do their job," says Nelson.
Besides policy differences, Nelson major complaint about Burgum has been his inaccessibility since the primary, to both the news media and to him as a fellow candidate. He believes strongly that this is not in the best interest of the people of North Dakota.
"The big problem that I have in getting the state involved is that my opponent won't engage. He's hiding, he's running...so far we have got one debate scheduled, and I know there are people all over the state trying to schedule debates. He just won't engage," concludes Nelson.
He calls that unfortunate especially for the people of North Dakota who miss out on an honest discussion of the issues, not what he termed "million dollar ad campaigns".
Nelson is a Democratic member of the North Dakota House of Representatives, representing District 9. He was first elected to the chamber in 2010.
