Restoring the Dignity of Work

Statement

Dear Friend,

Since the "War on Poverty" was declared in 1965, over $16 trillion in taxpayer money has been spent on government welfare programs. Sadly, this has done little to alleviate poverty in America and has instead created a system of dependence.

Currently, the federal government operates more than 80 different overlapping programs for low-income Americans -- costing the taxpayer hundreds of billions of dollars each and every year.

These programs are so poorly designed that they frequently discourage participants from even looking for work. Furthermore, too many of these programs undermine the establishment and sustainment of traditional families.

Statistics show that an intact family is the best poverty fighting institution and they should be encouraged -- not discouraged.

That's why my Republican colleagues and I have put together a better way forward that will overhaul the welfare system to end the waste and abuse and restore the dignity of work to millions of Americans.

Any assistance should be aimed at providing folks who have fallen on difficult circumstances a short-term hand up so that they can become self-sufficient.

This should never become a permanent way of life. Our plan involves several basic principles:

✓ Reward hard work
✓ Tailor benefits to people's needs
✓ Eliminate waste, fraud and abuse
✓ Improve skills and schools
✓ Plan and save for the future
✓ Demand results

These important steps will help ensure your hard-earned tax dollars are no longer wasted on a failed welfare state while restoring the dignity of work for able-bodied Americans. I encourage each of you to go to www.better.gop and learn more about our plan to end the cycle of poverty.

Thank you and God Bless,
Brian Babin
