Esty Bills Featured in House Democrats' "Make It In America' Jobs Plan

Press Release

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) today announced that four bills she authored are included in House Democrats' new "Make It In America' economic agenda.

Led by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, the Make It In America plan is a comprehensive set of proposals focused on improving our manufacturing industry, closing the skills gap, building a 21st-century infrastructure, and helping innovators and entrepreneurs start and grow small businesses.

Esty's bills included in the agenda are the:

Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act, which would help women break into and start businesses in high-tech industries, where historically they have been underrepresented. This bill passed the House in March;
American Jobs Matter Act, which would leverage taxpayer money spent on federal contracts to support American manufacturers and boost job creation;
Technical Education Creates High-Paying (TECH) Careers Act, which would expand innovative community college and technical programs so that more Americans have the skills to break into high-tech, high-paying careers; and
Manufacturing Universities Act, which would provide federal support to help universities like UConn build programs to help students train and find employment in the manufacturing industry.

"The Make It In America agenda is full of detailed, bipartisan, actionable solutions to help Americans from all walks of life grow their businesses, start new ones, enter high-paying careers, and provide for their families," Esty said. "I'm proud that my proposals to lift up Connecticut's working families and support our small businesses were included in the jobs plan, and I'm excited to partner with Whip Hoyer and our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass these bills into law."

"I'm pleased to include Rep. Esty's bills in the new Make It In America plan," Hoyer said. "The proposals she has put forward will help ensure that more of our people can make it in America by expanding entrepreneurship, spurring innovation, and helping to close the skills gap. I thank her for introducing these four bills, and I look forward to working with her to advance the Make It In America plan."

Esty is also the author of the STEM Education Act, a bipartisan measure to strengthen STEM education efforts at federal science agencies and expand existing STEM education opportunities to include computer science. President Obama signed this measure into law last October.

In addition, Esty wrote several provisions into the five-year transportation bill that Congress passed in December. The Esty-authored measures increased funding for transit projects in Connecticut, improved Buy America requirements, established National Alternative Fuel Vehicle fueling corridors along major highways, and promoted the protection of pollinator habitat and forage.
