Issue Position: LGBT Equality

Issue Position

Governor Maggie Hassan has always fought for the rights of all citizens to participate fully in the civic and economic life of their communities. That is why, as a State Senator, she led the effort to achieve marriage equality in New Hampshire, winning over hesitant colleagues and making New Hampshire one of the first states to pass marriage equality.

As Governor, Maggie strengthened New Hampshire's marriage equality law to recognize out-of-state marriages and civil unions as of the date they were legally contracted, ensuring that all married couples in New Hampshire receive the fair and equal treatment under the law that they deserve. In 2015, New Hampshire joined several other states in an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to make marriage equality the law of the land. Maggie later celebrated the Court's landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, stating: "Throughout our history, every time we have sought to include all people in the life of our democracy, we have grown stronger and this decision is a momentous victory in our enduring quest to build a brighter future by fully including all people in our society."

In the Senate, Maggie will seek to build on this progress to create a stronger, more inclusive society where all citizens are fully included in civic and economic life, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
