In Pittsburgh, Toomey Calls on McGinty to Support Commonsense Security Measures

Press Release

Date: June 27, 2016
Location: Pittsburgh, PA

At the Pittsburgh Law Enforcement Memorial Monday afternoon, Senator Toomey was joined by members of the law enforcement community and called on Katie McGinty to support commonsense measures to protect Americans from terrorist threats. These measures include restoring police access to lifesaving federal surplus equipment like armored vehicles and protective gear, and ending sanctuary cities that can prohibit cooperation on terrorism investigations.

Senator Toomey's legislation, the Lifesaving Gear for Police Act, ends an Obama administration directive restricting local police departments from accessing essential lifesaving equipment that is crucial to counterterrorism efforts. Some of these same types of equipment, such as armored vehicles and controlled explosives, were used to respond to the horrific terrorist attack in Orlando.

"I've introduced legislation to undo this misguided Obama policy, it's called the Lifesaving Gear for Police Act, and it's a very, very important tool. I am grateful to be joined by law enforcement across the Commonwealth in support of this legislation," said Senator Pat Toomey in Pittsburgh. "I am calling on Katie McGinty, my opponent in this race, to let us know where she stands on this."

The Lifesaving Gear for Police Act is backed by the following law enforcement agencies:

Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association
Fraternal Order of Police
International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO
Major County Sheriffs' Association
National Association of Police Organizations
National Sheriffs' Association
Sergeants Benevolent Association of New York City
