Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) congratulated Northeast State Community College on being selected by the Department of Education as a Dual Enrollment experimental site. This designation allows certain low-income high school students taking courses for college credit to be eligible for federal Pell Grant funds in the 2016-2017 school year.

Roe released the following statement on the announcement:

"I congratulate Northeast State on being selected as an experimental site by the Department of Education. This experiment will provide low-income high school students who take courses for college credit with an opportunity they might not have otherwise had, and could pave the way for students with similar backgrounds around the country to have access to Pell Grants if they choose to take college courses in high school. No student interested in getting a jumpstart on their college degree should be prohibited by cost, and I hope this experiment will lead to a fiscally-responsible solution to get more high school students interested in Dual Enrollment. Northeast State is fortunate to have the leadership of President Gilliam, and I look forward to following this experiment in the upcoming school year."
44 postsecondary institutions across 23 states were invited to participate in this experiment.
