Obama Administration Abandons Idea of Using Illegal Executive Orders To Close GTMO Prison

Statement

Date: June 13, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Administration sources revealed that President Obama will not use executive orders in his attempt to close the Guantanamo Bay prison. Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) released the following statement regarding the decision:

"Finally, President Obama has abandoned the notion of using an executive order to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center -- this type of order would have been illegal and unconstitutional. Both the American people and Congress have repeatedly and consistently stated that the detention center should be kept open, and must be kept open to protect America's national security. I am proud to have championed this fight and proud to have forced the Administration to stop their reckless and misguided attempts to shut down the Guantanamo Bay detention center."
