Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) recently was named a 2016 Public Policy Champion of Philanthropy by the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance in recognition of his support of charitable giving.

"I am honored to receive this award and will continue to support policies that encourage Hoosier foundations, charities and faith-based organizations," said Coats.

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Coats has consistently advocated maintaining the charitable deduction, simplifying the private foundation excise tax into a flat tax and making the tax-free rollover from a retirement account to charity permanent. Coats voted for last year's PATH Act, which made the rollover permanent, as well as other provisions that support the nonprofit sector. Coats also introduced the NOTICE Act, legislation approved by the Finance Committee that would require the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to notify nonprofit organizations in a timely manner before their tax-exempt status is automatically revoked. The bill also provides a more streamlined method of having the exempt status reinstated if the nonprofit did not receive this notice.
