Moran Announces Big Red One's Return to Fort Riley

Press Release

Date: July 27, 2005
Location: Junction City, KS

Congressman Jerry Moran today announced that the headquarters for the U.S. Army's First Infantry Division, also known as the Big Red One, will return to Fort Riley next year. The First Division Headquarters was housed at Fort Riley until 1996, when it was moved to Germany.

"Fort Riley and the Junction City community have worked hard to make the Fort one of the premiere war training centers in the world," Moran said. "This announcement demonstrates that Fort Riley is essential to meeting today's military needs and that it has the training and deployment capabilities our nation requires. The Fort also has the strong community support necessary to provide a high quality of life for our soldiers and their families.

"In the coming weeks and months, I will work with my colleagues in Congress to make sure that Kansas and the Fort Riley area are prepared for the increase in jobs, people and demands, in order to accommodate these troops and their families. Junction City and Geary County have been a great addition to the First District, and I look forward to working with Congressman Ryun to see that the area's housing and infrastructure needs are met."

Since Geary County was added to the First Congressional District in 2002, Moran has made returning the Big Red One to Fort Riley a top priority. Moran has joined with Congressman Jim Ryun (KS-02) and Senators Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback to urge the Department of Defense to return the Big Red One to its home at Fort Riley. Also, as a result of today's announcement, three Brigade Combat Teams will be stationed at Fort Riley within the next year.
