Ellmers FCC Transparency Bill Passes House of Representatives Without Opposition

Statement

Date: May 23, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC-02) issued the below release following passage of her legislation, H.R. 2589, under suspension. H.R. 2589 is a measure requiring the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to publish online within 24 hours any approved changes to agency rules.

"It's pretty simple -- the public has a right to know what policies the FCC is enacting. An agency composed of unelected bureaucrats shouldn't be allowed to conduct its business in the dark-- there should be a basic standard of transparency underpinning the FCC's decision-making process and it should be one that encourages prompt publishing of the agency's rule changes. I'm proud to say that my bipartisan legislation today will enforce this standard."

"I am grateful for the Energy & Commerce Committee's continued commitment to usher in transparency at the FCC - a principle that has been consistently touted by the Obama Administration, the FCC, and members of both parties."

Background:

Today, the House of Representatives voted on four telecommunications bills that were passed out of the Energy & Commerce Committee and voted on under suspension. Bills voted on under suspension are typically considered noncontroversial.
