Chairman Salmon Applauds Prime Minister Modi's Address

Statement

Date: June 8, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05), chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, today released the following statement after seeing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to a Joint Session of Congress.

"I was honored to attend today's address by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is no surprise that many of our nations' priorities align, and his address underscored the need for a strong partnership between the world's oldest democracy and the world's largest democracy because of our shared values.

"Continuing to broaden our trade relationships, deepening our defense partnership, and innovating together will bring prosperity and security to both of our countries. Nowhere is this strong relationship more clearly demonstrated than by India's decision to purchase 22 Apache helicopters last year, made in my hometown of Mesa, Arizona, and the announcement today by the American firm Westinghouse of their intentions to build and export six nuclear reactors in India.

"The Prime Minister's visit has been a fitting reminder of our nations' high respect for one another and India's shining example of democracy in Asia. I celebrate today's reinvigoration of our friendship, and look forward to Congress playing an active role in the "new symphony' of U.S.-India relations the Prime Minister envisioned today."
