Walberg-Backed Asset Forfeiture Legislation Advances Through Judiciary Committee

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) praised the House Judiciary Committee for passing the Due Process Act, bipartisan legislation he helped introduce to curb civil asset forfeiture abuse and defend the American people's due process and private property rights. The legislation incorporates many of the key provisions of the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration Act (FAIR Act), which Congressman Walberg introduced with Senator Rand Paul in January 2015.

"Seizing private property without charging property owners with a crime infringes on an individual's constitutionally protected rights. We must put an end to this abusive practice and return the balance of power back to the American people. I applaud Chairman Goodlatte for taking swift action to embrace and expedite these important reforms through the Judiciary Committee less than a week after the bill's introduction," said Walberg.
