Gov. Rick Snyder Makes Appointment, Reappointments to the Michigan Community Corrections Board

Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Keith Turpel of Kalamazoo and the reappointments of William DeBoer of Byron Center, Cory Chavis of Canton, and Matthew Heins of Jackson, to the Community Corrections Board.

The 13-member board serves in an advisory capacity to the director of the Michigan Department of Corrections and is charged with making suggestions to approve many aspects of community corrections programs throughout the state.

"I thank these appointees for their willingness to serve our state in these important roles," Snyder said.

Appointment:
Turpel is a sole practitioner in criminal law dealing with misdemeanors and felonies in the Michigan District and Circuit Courts, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan. Turpel holds a bachelor's degree of arts from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Wayne State University. He will represent criminal defense attorneys and fills a vacancy created by Tom Clement.

Reappointments:
DeBoer is president and CEO of the Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program. DeBoer holds a bachelor's degree in science and sociology from Calvin College. He will continue to represent existing community alternatives programs.

Heins is the chief of police and the chief of fire services for the city of Jackson. He holds a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a master's degree in public administration from Western Michigan University. He will continue to represent city police departments.

Appointees serve four-year terms expiring March 31, 2020. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
