Cramer's Committee Approves Increase in NASA Funding

U.S. Representative Bud Cramer (D-Ala.) announced today that his Appropriations Committee approved the Fiscal Year 2006 Science, State, Justice, and Commerce Appropriations Bill. In this legislation, the Committee provided $16.47 billion for NASA and its programs. This amount is a funding increase of $14 million over the President's request and $274 million above the current year's enacted funding.

"NASA is embarking on a new mission of exploration and discovery and as a member of the SSJC Appropriations Subcommittee, I am in a strong position to help the Agency move forward with its plans," said Cramer. "The Marshall Space Flight Center has a long legacy of helping NASA meet its priorities. I believe that Marshall must be a strong part of NASA's future plans and I will continue to advocate in Congress for the numerous world-class scientists and engineers at Marshall."

The Committee also included language strongly emphasizing the important roles of NASA field centers. He said, "Over many decades, NASA has established field centers with unique skills and capabilities. Since I arrived in Washington, I have worked to educate my colleagues and the Administration about the value of these centers and I'm pleased the Committee has asked NASA to fully utilize the competencies resident at each center."

The bill now moves to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
