Congressman Rubén Hinojosa Statement on Supreme Court Review of Immigration Executive Actions

Statement

Date: Jan. 19, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa released the following remarks in regards to the Supreme Court's decision to hear United States v. Texas, highlighting the President's Immigration Executive Actions:

"I am heartened in response to the Supreme Court's decision to hear an appeal of the Fifth Circuit's ruling that continues to block implementation of President Obama's Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Expansion programs, which are consistent with American values and tradition. In a few months, the Supreme Court will have the opportunity to rule in favor of preventing families from being torn apart.

"Every president since President Reagan, both Democrats and Republicans, have used the legal authority invested in the presidency by Congress to defer removal when it is in the best interest of the United States. President Obama used this authority to take executive action on immigration in order to better meet the needs of our country and shared principles. This is a time to continue positive action in support of an issue which remains shamefully neglected and keeps five million people in a state of constant fear.

"Along with my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, I encourage Congress to take up the issue of immigration reform. Honest, hard-working families do not deserve to suffer due to congressional inaction.

"To be clear, the original 2012 DACA program will remain active and not be affected by the United States v. Texas case. Latinos must also stay vigilant of possible scams by notarios, as this Supreme Court announcement does not mean there is an official ruling on the matter as of yet."
