Pittenger Votes for Fiscal Responsibility

Press Release

Date: Feb. 11, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Since February 1st, the federal government has borrowed $2.6 million every minute. With our national debt recently crossing the $19 trillion threshold, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) today voted in favor of H.R. 3442, The Debt Management and Fiscal Responsibility Act, a bill to force Washington bureaucrats to live by the same rules as hardworking American families.

Under the Obama Administration, when the Treasury Department requests a debt limit increase from Congress, it does so without any analysis of the impact on the economy and job creation. H.R. 3442 would promote transparency and accountability by requiring the Secretary of Treasury to appear before Congress at least 21 days prior to the Administration's estimated date of hitting the debt ceiling and explain:

The state of the debt and the Administration's plans to meet debt obligations,
Current projections of the fiscal sustainability of major entitlement programs,
The economic impact of increasing the debt limit, and
How the Administration proposes to reduce the debt.

"Earlier this week, President Obama presented the American people a roadmap to financial collapse in his proposed budget," said Congressman Pittenger.

"We can't continue to flagrantly spend money without a serious plan to put the country back on a path of fiscal sanity.

"When hardworking American families go over budget, they have to make tough decisions and come up with a solution. It's past time for Washington to do the same."

H.R. 3442 passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a strong, bipartisan vote of 267-151.

Congressman Pittenger serves on the House Financial Services Committee and on the conservative Republican Study Committee's Budget Task Force.
