$48 Million in Affordable Housing Grants Awarded to Kane, Will Counties and State of Illinois

U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14) today announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded the State of Illinois and local governments millions of dollars in grants for Fiscal Year 2016 to help provide housing assistance for needy individuals and families, including more than $48 million affecting the 14th Congressional District.

"Colder months are ahead in Illinois and the 14th District, and I'm pleased at the additional assistance provided to our neighbors most in need this next year," said Rep. Hultgren. "I trust our state and local officials will use this funding efficiently and responsibly to ensure the "least of these' in our communities are served well."

Shown below are Illinois- and 14th District-specific Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), HOME, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) awards.

The Community Development Block Grants program provides annual grants to States and local units of government to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.

The Emergency Solutions Grants program provides funding to engage homeless individuals and families living on the street; improve the number, quality and operations of emergency shelters for homeless individuals and families; provide essential services to shelter residents, rapidly re-house homeless individuals and families, and prevent families/individuals from becoming homeless.

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to States and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.

The HOPWA program provides housing assistance and related supportive services to local units of government, States and non-profit organizations for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
