Schakowsky Statement on Supreme Court's Decision to Hear Crucial Texas Abortion Case

Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States announced that they would hear Whole Woman's Health v. Cole:

"The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to Texas laws that restrict access to safe abortions -- the most important case for women's health and reproductive choice since Roe v. Wade. The stakes couldn't be higher. Decades of advances in women's health and women's rights are on the line.

All across the country, women's reproductive rights are under attack -- in state legislatures and in the halls of Congress where House Republicans have passed legislation to defund Planned Parenthood clinics and launched a partisan investigation that is a not-so-veiled attempt to undermine women's health.

The restrictions placed in the Texas law would seriously curtail access to abortion -- reducing the amount of clinics in the state from 40 to 10 and endangering the health of countless women. I am hopeful that the Supreme Court will see that those restrictions violation women's Constitutional rights. At the same time, it is essential that all of us who believe that women should be respected to make personal health care decisions -- without interference by politicians -- speak out clearly and forcefully. I will continue to fight for women's health and the right to choose. We must ensure that our gains are not rolled back."
