Pelosi Statement on Republicans' Failure to Advance Budget

Statement

Date: March 21, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after House Republicans indicated they will not bring a budget to a floor vote before the House recesses for two weeks:

"The Republican Leadership has proposed the most brutal "Road to Ruin' budget in history, and it still isn't enough to satisfy the radical forces that have seized control of the Republican Party. Even a budget that does this much damage to good-paying jobs, to seniors, and to the promise of basic economic security for every American does not go far enough for the House Republican Conference.

"Now, House Republicans prepare to leave for two weeks without having brought a budget to the House Floor for a vote and without having provided resources for the urgent public health crises facing our nation. As the House Democratic Leadership wrote to Speaker Ryan last week, the spread of the Zika virus, the tragedy of opioid addiction and the Flint water crisis require swift and decisive Congressional action. The House must not recess before we address these emergencies threatening the lives and the futures of so many American families.

"Families facing Zika, addiction and contaminated water cannot afford more indifference and inaction from the Republican Congress. It is simply unconscionable that the House Republican Leadership plans two weeks of recess without acting to address these public health crises and without passing a budget blueprint for next year."
