Specter & Santorum Announce Senate Committee Approval Of Pennsylvania Energy Projects
SPECTER & SANTORUM ANNOUNCE SENATE COMMITTEE APPROVAL OF PENNSYLVANIA ENERGY PROJECTS
Energy Funding Is a Part of the FY06 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, and U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, announced today that the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved federal funding for Department of Energy projects in Pennsylvania. The funding is part of the FY06 Energy and Water Appropriations bill.
"I am pleased my colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee have approved funding for these important Pennsylvania projects," Senator Specter said. "The research these projects yield will result in cleaner and more efficient energy production, and will increase our productivity and competitiveness in the global market."
"These projects are important not only to Pennsylvanians but to our nation as a whole," Senator Santorum stated. "Advances made through these projects are not only consistent with the goal of a healthy and sustainable environment, but allow us to expand our domestic resources and reduce our dependency on foreign energy sources."
The FY06 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill is pending further action by the full Senate and the House of Representatives, followed by the signature of the President.
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved funding for the following projects, which would be allocated through the Department of Energy (DOE):
$106.9 million for the National Energy Technology Lab in Allegheny County for operations and research of more than 700 research projects in all 50 States and 16 foreign countries, most involving the development of advanced coal, oil, and natural gas technologies.
$5 million for Siemens Westinghouse in Allegheny County for research and development of Solid Oxide, Fuel Cells. Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) are expected to play a major role the development of distributed energy generation systems in the future because of their low emissions, small size, high efficiencies and ease of siting.
$5 million for AEA Technologies in Allegheny County to provide technology to support the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States Department of Energy and the United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry for cleanup in the energy and environmental arena (such as waste management, decommissioning, renewable energy, energy efficiency and remote handling).
$2 million for Ion Transport Membrane (ITM) Syngas Project, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., in Lehigh County to fund technologies to produce synthesis gas (hydrogen and carbon monoxide) from natural gas in a single step.
$1.762 million for the University City Science Park in Philadelphia County for laboratory expansions and technology upgrades.
$1 million for the Green Oil Company in Bucks County for research and development of canola-based automotive oil, which has potential environmental benefits as being ninety-eight percent biodegradable and reducing United States dependence on foreign energy sources.
$500,000 for Breen Energy Solutions in Allegheny County for a research project on coal-waste slurry reburn as a renewable energy source.
