Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement commemorating National Cancer Prevention Month:

"Cancer is a devastating disease which has caused so much suffering, torn apart families and ended far too many lives.

"This year in America, it's estimated that cancer will kill 600,000 Americans and that more than 1.6 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed. We cannot underestimate the importance of early cancer detection which is why we must ensure key preventive care, like cancer screenings.

"My dear friends and family have valiantly fought cancer; some of my loved ones have succumbed to this disease and some are still battling it.

"I am filled with hope by Vice President Biden's Cancer Moonshot Task Force which will launch the next phase of cancer research to prevent and treat this tragic epidemic.

"Backed by the full resources of the United States, we can assemble the most brilliant and innovative minds to end cancer once and for all."

Rep. Sanchez has supported continued funding and investment in the Department of Defense's Breast Cancer Research Program. Rep. Sanchez has also co-sponsored several bills on cancer treatment, prevention and awareness, including: the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act of 2015, the Childhood Cancer STAR Act, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act, the Breast Cancer Research Stamp Reauthorization Act, and the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Act.
