Ros-Lehtinen Supports Little Sisters of the Poor's Petition Before Supreme Court, Continues to Champion Pro-Life Policies

Press Release

Date: Jan. 8, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27) announced that she has joined her Congressional colleagues in supporting the petition before the Supreme Court filed by the Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious non-profit organizations that are challenging the Department of Health and Human Services contraception mandate. The Obama administration is forcing the Little Sisters to violate their religious beliefs by compelling them to make decisions inconsistent with their faith.

Ros-Lehtinen has a long record of supporting pro-life causes, and has consistently fought against federal funding for abortion. As you may be aware, there have been a number of undercover videos that detail Planned Parenthood Federation of America's terrible practices of harvesting and selling aborted fetuses. Ros-Lehtinen has criticized these practices and has taken the following votes to ensure that PPFA, our nation's largest abortion provider, doesn't receive any more funds from the federal government. Ros-Lehtinen voted in favor of:

* The Restoring Americans' Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act, which would make Planned Parenthood ineligible for the vast majority of the federal funding it currently receives and relocates the money to providers that respect and protect the innocent unborn.

* The Defund Planned Parenthood Act, which would prohibit taxpayer funding for one year to Planned Parenthood unless it certifies that it and its affiliates do not perform abortions and they will not provide funds to those who do so.

* Establishing a Select Investigative Panel on abortion and fetal tissue procurement.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"Religious liberty is one of our nation's basic tenets, and it is our duty to ensure it is respected. By excessing its statutory authority, the Obama Administration is infringing on religious organizations to practice their sincere and deeply held beliefs, and it should be subject to the strictest of scrutiny. Religious organizations should not be forced to provide services that violate their faith.

Throughout my years in public service I have voted to defund Planned Parenthood. For the first time, a bill that would achieve this important goal made it to the president's desk earlier this week. American taxpayers should not be footing the bill for organizations that perform abortions.

As a mother and a grandmother, I believe that protecting the sacred life of the innocent unborn is a worthy cause, and I'm proud to fight for the most vulnerable among us and give a voice in Congress to those who cannot speak for themselves."
