U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding the United Nations General Assembly vote against the U.S. embargo on the Castro regime. The United States and Israel both voted against the resolution. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"The United States voted against the Cuban resolution while, once again, the United Nations General Assembly falls in line to support the brutal Castro dictatorship while ignoring the plight of the people of Cuba. Instead of voting against US efforts to sanction oppressors, the international community should be condemning the communist regime and calling for changes to the dictatorship that has not allowed free and fair elections or the exercise of basic human rights since its illegal power grab.

The UN's annual vote again demonstrates what we know: that this institution is not interested in the democratic rights or freedoms of those living under repressive regimes. Unfortunately, we are unable to expect much from an institution that names dictators to its Human Rights Council.

Lastly, I would like to commend our ally, the democratic Jewish State of Israel, for standing against this farcical resolution and voting with the United States."
