Rep. Roybal-Allard Statement on Exide and Community Activism

Statement

Date: Feb. 19, 2016
Location: Commerce, CA

Today, a press conference is being held in Boyle Heights to honor the community activism that contributed to Governor Jerry Brown's recent proposal to fund expedited and expanded testing and cleanup of residential properties, schools, daycare centers, and parks around the former Exide Technologies facility in Vernon. Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), who represents Vernon and many of the surrounding communities, is issuing the following statement on the event:

"As a mother and a grandmother, I am encouraged by Governor Jerry Brown's proposal of $176.6 million to clean up the environmental crisis created by Exide that has harmed so many of our families. While much more needs to be done to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods, this is an important step in reaching that goal.

"I commend all elected officials and community advocates for the critical role they played in securing this funding proposal.

"This milestone is an example of the strength and effectiveness of our community when we work together to protect our children and loved ones.

"We must remain vigilant and united during this long and arduous process to ensure transparency and accountability, and to expedite delivery of the funds, the necessary soil sampling, and the residential clean-up.

"I look forward to continue working with all stakeholders to protect our community."
