Individuals, families, and businesses all must balance a checkbook and stay within a budget to remain solvent. How is government different? Debt is not a bad thing. Many people take on a mortgage to buy a home for their family. Who hasn't had a car payment at some point in their lives? Government must spend wisely, because it, too, can become overburdened and collapse in financial ruin.

My plan to handle the national debt is simple and realistic. First, we need to reign in government spending. I've never known someone who has spent themselves into wealth and prosperity. Sure, investing in capital improvements, investing in infrastructure, investing in business can be good. I'm talking about wasteful spending. Spending $500,000 to research shrimp on treadmills is not the same as stabilizing bridges and roadways.

Also of importance, we must expand our tax base. We need new businesses growth and we need to get more people back to work. When businesses flourish and more people are able to work, government collects more tax dollars from a larger, more widespread tax base.
