Speier Applauds President Obama's Executive Actions to Prevent Gun Violence

Today, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo), released the following statement about the White House's announcement of 10 executive actions to curb gun violence:

"I share President Obama's deep frustration with Congress's refusal to take actions against gun violence. His executive orders are good first steps to save some of the American children, families, and loved ones who are losing their lives every single day. These actions will help the police enforce our existing background check laws, and shrink the enormous loopholes that let dangerous people purchase guns without background checks.

"Now it's up to Congress to act. I will not sit idly as our Republican leaders prevent commonsense gun legislation from coming to the House floor for a vote. It is cowardly to prevent the American people from knowing where we all stand on these issues. We lose some 33,000 lives every year to gun violence. We must follow up these executive efforts with Congressional actions that ensure background checks cover all gun sales, stop the spread of dangerous assault weapons, initiate cutting-edge research into smarter, safer weapons, and lift the ban on public health research into the ways we can best prevent gun deaths. It's time to pass laws like my Fix Gun Checks Act, which has 89 cosponsors and would ensure all gun sales require a background check."
