Issues: Defense

The U.S. Senate today authorized and appropriated $9.4 million for Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in its National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The NDAA will now head to the President's desk for signature. This funding will help YARS make improvements to its indoor firing range facility.

"Updating the indoor firing range at YARS will ensure that those serving our nation have the opportunity to test their skills during training," said Brown. "Our servicemembers need effective training to ensure their safety and the safety of those they serve. The upgrades to the firing range will ensure that they are prepared for future missions."

The range is used to train and test airmen for qualifications with their service weapons for personal protection and ground base defense. The current range is 30 years old and fails to meet current safety requirements. This funding will correct this serious deficiency and improve the training that occurs at YARS.
