Funding Will Allow Fire Dept. to Replace Old Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA's)

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $55,762 in federal funding for Erin Volunteer Fire Department in Chemung County. The funding was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The Erin Volunteer Fire Department will use this federal investment to replace old self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA's).
"This vital funding will provide Southern Tier firefighters with the equipment necessary to safely do their jobs to the utmost of their ability," said Senator Schumer. "Firefighters are our chief defense in protecting our communities. They put their lives on the line each day, which is why it is critical we provide them with the resources they need to continue their life-saving work."
"Erin Volunteer Fire Department will use this funding to invest in critical equipment that will help keep firefighters safe during emergency situations," said Senator Gillibrand. "Our first responders are on the frontlines during emergencies and should have the most up-to-date equipment to carry out their lifesaving work more effectively."
"The grant we received from FEMA will be used to replace our 15 year old SCBA's and also allow us to purchase the required extra bottles with them," said Erin Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Cedar. "Being able to purchase this necessary equipment will enhance our firefighters safety and give our department the necessary means to better protect our small community without putting an even higher tax burden on them. With the tax cap that is now in place we would not be able to afford to purchase this equipment without the help of the federal government."
The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the Department's United States Fire Administration. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to the applicants that most closely address the program's priorities and demonstrate financial need. Funding is allocated to strengthen emergency preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards.
