Scott Statement on Passage of Internship Legislation

Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement today after the House passed H.R. 3231, the Federal Intern Protection Act, a bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against or sexually harass unpaid interns in the federal government:

"Congress must do more to protect unpaid interns -- be it in the federal agencies, the halls of Congress, or the private sector. The House Committee on Education and the Workforce has jurisdiction to review legislation that strengthens worker protections and defends the civil rights laws of workers, including fighting against discrimination and supporting diversity in the workplace.

"Now that the House has considered H.R. 3231, I am calling upon the leadership on the Education and the Workforce Committee to move expeditiously to consider the companion legislation, H.R. 3232, the Unpaid Intern Protection Act. This bill would ensure that unpaid interns in the private sector are free from discrimination and harassment as protected by the Civil Rights Act."
