Johnson Encourages Ohioans to Take Advantage of Sales Tax Holiday

Statement

Date: Aug. 4, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement as Ohio's first-ever "sales tax holiday" approaches this weekend:

"This measure helps keep retail revenue and jobs in Ohio, allows Ohio consumers to do their back-to-school shopping closer to home, and attracts consumers from neighboring states to shop in Ohio," Bill Johnson said. "This is a simple economic concept that is a win-win-win for Ohio consumers, retailers, and local and county governments. I am hopeful that as Ohioans reap the benefits from this sales tax holiday weekend, they let their legislators know their desire to make this an annual event."

Prior to his election to Congress, Johnson built a grassroots coalition called the Ohio Sales Tax Reform Incentive (OSTRI), that first advocated for this legislation in 2009.

Ohio Senate Bill 243 enacted a one-time sales tax holiday to occur in 2015; the holiday starts on Friday, August 7th, and runs through Sunday, August 9th. Ohio is now the 19th state to offer a sales tax holiday. During the holiday, the following items are exempt from sales and use tax: clothing and footwear priced at $75 per item or less; school supplies priced at $20 per item or less; and, school instructional material priced at $20 per item or less.
