Inhofe Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood in Continuing Resolution

Statement

Date: Sept. 24, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today voted in favor of a continuing resolution that would fund the federal government until mid-December while also defunding Planned Parenthood of its federal taxpayer subsidies. The continuing resolution failed on a motion to proceed by a vote of 47-52.

"I have long advocated for Congress to end federal funding of Planned Parenthood," said Inhofe. "Oklahomans do not support their tax dollars being sent to an organization that snuffs out the innocent lives of the unborn. While this effort to defund Planned Parenthood was blocked, I urge leadership to continue setting up votes that will put members and the president on the record for their stance on the death of nearly 58 million Americans since Roe vs. Wade. I applaud the tireless, hard work of the pro-life movement to keep this issue at the forefront of Congress and our nation. While it is disappointing to see Senate Democrats turn a blind eye to the recent videos of Planned Parenthood exploiting innocent life for alleged financial gain through the harvesting of organs, the fight is not over."

Planned Parenthood receives roughly $1.4 million taxpayer dollars every day according to their 2013-2014 annual report.

On July 28, Inhofe introduced S.1877 to require a special prosecutor to be appointed by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals for the purpose of investigating Planned Parenthood's alleged violation of federal law, including changing or delaying abortion procedures for the sole purpose of harvesting fetal tissue and selling fetal tissue for profit. The legislation would also rescind federal funding to Planned Parenthood as a means to pay for this special investigation and would also authorize the investigation of any other organization that funds or conducts abortions.
