Vitter Votes Against Funding Abortion Mills, Planned Parenthood

Press Release

Date: Sept. 28, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) today issued the following statement regarding his decision to vote against legislation that would provide federal funds to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America as part of the budget resolution to continue funding the government.

"Tonight's vote will allow federal funds to flow to abortion mills, including Planned Parenthood -- which I find completely reprehensible," said Vitter. "There is no defensible explanation for allowing Planned Parenthood to continue to profit from taxpayer dollars."

‎The Senate today voted to move forward with a bill to continue funding the government through mid-December with a vote of 77 to 19. The legislation would continue funding Planned Parenthood.

Vitter has been a consistent advocate for the sanctity of human life in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, earning a 100% pro-life voting record from the National Right to Life Committee.

In July, Vitter joined 49 other Senators in sending a letter to Sylvia Burwell, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), after footage surfaced exposing Planned Parenthood's practice of harvesting and selling organs of unborn babies, a practice of which senior executives were aware. In the letter, the Senators urged HHS to cooperate with ongoing and future investigations into the legal, ethical, and policy issues raised by the footage.

Last year, Vitter requested the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct an investigation, which resulted in a report exposing over 1,000 health insurance plans under Obamacare that included funding for abortions, even though such funding is illegal under federal law. Additionally, a second Vitter-requested report from GAO exposed that taxpayer dollars were used for funding abortion advocacy organizations.
