Moulton Helps Lead New Effort On LGBT Equality

Statement

Date: Sept. 10, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) announced his support for the Equality Act, new legislation to ban discrimination against LGBT individuals in public accommodations, housing, employment, and other areas of public life. Moulton, a long-time champion of LGBT rights, joined more than 140 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in cosponsoring the legislation.

"No one should ever be discriminated against because of whom they love. That's not who we are as Americans," said Moulton. "Every American deserves the same basic protections under the law. The Equality Act will help ensure the LGBT community is protected, just like everyone else."

The Equality Act will amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to make it illegal to discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The legislation would apply to public accommodations, federal funding, education, employment, housing, credit, and jury service.
