Rangel on Tragic Explosion At JFK High School In Bronx

Press Release

Date: Aug. 21, 2015
Location: New York, NY
Issues: Infrastructure

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement on the explosion at John F. Kennedy High School in the Marble Hill Section of the Bronx:

"I am disheartened to hear about the explosion that occurred during construction work to modernize the science labs at the John F. Kennedy High School located in the Bronx part of our congressional district. Although the school was not in session, the shock of the explosion alarmed nearby residents. Thankfully, most of the construction workers and custodial staff were on a break during the time of the blast. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the workers who were injured, one critically.

We are grateful to have outstanding rescue workers and first responders who have been on the scene, caring for the wounded, controlling the fire, and dealing with the aftermath of the explosion. Ensuring the safety of our schools for our children should be our top priority.

I am confident that the FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro, the School Construction Authority and building engineers will swiftly assess the structural integrity of the building to determine whether it is safe to occupy. We want to make certain that the JFK Building, which also houses 3 additional schools, is fully ready and secure for the start of NYC's school year on Wednesday, September 9, 2015.

It is imperative that we address our city's critical infrastructure to prevent future accidents. As we wait for the conclusion of the investigation on the explosion, I will continue to work with Mayor Bill de Blasio, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and other elected leaders to make our beloved community a safe place for everyone to live and learn. If you have any safety concerns, please call 311."
