This Week: Committee Will Look To Say #Yes2Energy

Press Release

Date: Sept. 14, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has scheduled a markup on Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building to consider H.R. __, the North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2015 and H.R. 702, legislation to lift the ban on crude oil exports. Members will convene for opening statements only on Wednesday and reconvene to consider both pieces of legislation Thursday, September 17, at 10:00 a.m.

The full committee will consider a draft of its long-awaited energy package - an effort that was first launched by Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton last Congress. Members have been working over the last few months to develop a broad energy bill that brings our nation's energy policies into the 21st century. Through thoughtful feedback solicited from both governmental and non-governmental witnesses, including the Secretary of Energy, the committee continues to refine the bill into four titles -- modernizing energy infrastructure, 21st century workforce, energy security and diplomacy, and energy efficiency and accountability. A manager's amendment is expected ahead of the markup.

The committee will also consider H.R. 702, sponsored by Chairman Emeritus Joe Barton (R-TX), which ends the nearly 40-year-old-ban on crude oil exports. The bill passed the Subcommittee on Energy and Power last week by voice vote.

Upton commented, "It is time for our energy policies to catch up to our new era of abundance. These two bills will help create jobs, keep energy affordable, boost production, and improve energy security -- all areas that should achieve broad bipartisan support. This week will mark an important milestone in our pursuit of policies that say yes to energy."

An electronic copy of H.R. 702 and the North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2015 can be found on the Energy and Commerce Committee's website here. A background memo, amendments, and votes will be available at the same link as they are posted.
