Portman Statement on Bipartisan Education Legislation

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) today released the following statement regarding his vote in support of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) reauthorization:

"This bipartisan legislation takes important steps toward returning education standards to those who know the students best -- parents, teachers, and their local school boards. This bill ensures the federal government will no longer be able to impose Common Core or any other academic standards on states. Further, this legislation will end overreliance on standardized tests, which has led to over-testing and forced teachers to "teach to the test.' These reforms are supported by teachers, parents, and education experts. I believe these reforms will ultimately help to improve Ohio students' performance in school and put them on a path toward success."
