Statement

Date: June 23, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), released the following statement regarding the announcement that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will begin repair work to the Cleveland Harbor East Breakwater to fix the $31.4 million worth of damages caused by Superstorm Sandy, October 2012.

"Hurricane Sandy hit Ohio hard, especially along Lake Erie, causing considerable damage to the Cleveland Harbor and the Great Lakes waterways and lost economic activity," Portman stated. "I'm pleased the Army Corps will begin this important infrastructure restoration work which will help to ensure the Harbor's navigation system is working properly while also protecting jobs and the local economy."

In 2013, Portman joined a bipartisan group of Great Lakes Senators to urge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to repair Great Lakes ports, harbors, and waterways that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, including the repair of the Cleveland Harbor's breakwater and for dredging of the Harbor.
