Isakson Works To End 'Sanctuary Cities'

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., a longtime advocate of strong border security, co-sponsored legislation that will financially penalize local and state governments that defy federal law and become so-called "sanctuary cities" that shelter illegal immigrants and protect them from deportation.

The Michael Davis, Jr. and Danny Oliver in Honor of State and Local Law Enforcement Act, S.1640, also includes provisions that enhance collaboration between local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of immigration law and ensure dangerous illegal aliens are not released back into the community once arrested.

"So-called "sanctuary cities' undermine the rule of law, and they are simply unacceptable," said Isakson. "They also make it more difficult to deport illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes. I applaud the leaders in my home state of Georgia for their foresight in proactively prohibiting local governments from adopting these policies.

"The defense of our nation begins with securing our borders and ending the opportunity for illegal entry. Our immigration laws must be followed, and they must be enforced. I stand in full support of those who do both."
