Heitkamp Announces Significant Federal Funding for Kenmare Airport

Press Release

Date: July 13, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Transportation

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced more than $350,000 in federal funding for the Kenmare Municipal Airport. The funding will be used to restore the airport's runway lighting system, rotating beacon, and lighted windcone.

"Investing in aviation infrastructure is essential for North Dakota, especially as our population and economy continue to grow," said Heitkamp. "We need a robust transportation infrastructure to keep our communities strong and safe, and this rehabilitative federal funding will help improve the operations of Kenmare's airport."

In April 2014, Heitkamp brought Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Michael Huerta to North Dakota to see firsthand the aviation challenges facing the western part of the state. During the visit, Huerta traveled to Williston and learned more about the drastic rise in passenger enplanements, placing major stress on airport infrastructure.

In May 2015, as part of her Strong & Safe Communities Initiative, Heitkamp brought together community leaders from Bismarck, Minot, and surrounding towns to discuss the state's transportation infrastructure needs.

The funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
