U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) today made the following statement regarding President Obama's announcement of a controversial carbon emission rule that would affect existing, modified and reconstructed, and new power plants and electricity supply across the country.

"With its release of a massively expensive and controversial regulation, the Obama EPA has made clear that they will continue to push their avalanche of regulations, advancing a political agenda over the thousands of jobs that will be destroyed and the increase the cost of electricity for middle-class families and businesses," said Vitter. "The worst part is that the rule -- prepared by EPA and outside far-left advocacy groups -- was written behind closed doors and with zero consideration of the real world concerns of middle class American families."

A senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Vitter has investigated the inappropriate influence of outside organizations over the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during the rulemaking process, and has specifically looked into the Natural Resources Defense Council's (NRDC) influence during the fractured rulemaking process for existing power plants under Section 111(d) of the Clean Air Act. The newly announced rule is expected to have a drastic economic effect on existing power plants and associated jobs.
